Joelle Slocum, Assistant Manager
Mitchell & McCallum, Get Dignity First Care

From a very young age, caring for others came as naturally to me as breathing. Whether it was comforting a classmate, feeding a stray animal, or offering kindness to a stranger, my instinct was always to step in and help. Compassion wasn’t something I learned—it was something I lived. There was no deliberate choice to become a “helper”; it was simply who I was.

As I grew older and finished school, I began searching for part-time work and found myself drawn to a role that involved supporting someone in their home and assisting with their independent living. That experience opened my eyes and heart to the profound impact of compassionate care. I knew then that this was more than a job—it was my calling.

Determined to build a meaningful career, I pursued studies in Community Services, Mental Health, Disability, and Alcohol & Other Drugs (AOD). These fields allowed me to deepen my understanding and expand the ways I could support individuals from all walks of life. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with many people, each with their own unique story, needs, and strengths.

As I walked my own personal journey through life—facing my own challenges, setbacks, and moments of growth—I came to truly understand how powerful it is to have someone by your side. Someone who not only listens but genuinely gets it. That lived experience taught me the value of empathy on a deeper level. It reminded me that behind every struggle is a human being who deserves to be seen, supported, and never made to feel alone.

No two days are ever the same in this line of work—and that’s what I love about it. The challenges I face in the community are ones I embrace, because they mean I’m part of something greater: helping someone achieve their goals, walk their journey, and feel supported every step of the way.

Being part of Mitchell and McCallum now allows me to continue living out that purpose—offering care with heart, walking alongside individuals with understanding, and making a real difference in the lives of others. It’s a place where my passion, experience, and values align, and where I can continue to grow while being part of something truly meaningful.
